The Filipino American Council of Greater Chicago,founded in 1963, is one of the oldest Filipino American organizations in the country. There are more than 80,000 Filipino American living in the greater Chicago area today. They are part of a vibrant community which boasts of hundreds of Filipino American owned businesses and a network of media organizations including seven newspapers, four television shows and two radio programs. Jose P. Rizal Heritage Center On August 21, 1974, a landmark yellow brick building in Chicago's Lake view neighborhood was rededicated as the José P. Rizal Heritage Center, after the Philippine national hero. The Rizal Center, which became the area's first Filipino American gathering place, celebrated its 30th anniversary this year! Dr. José Rizal, who inspired the Philippine Revolution. On December 30, 1896, at the age of 35, Rizal was executed by firing squad for his work that led to Philippine independence from Spain. Less than two years after Rizal's death, the Philippines won its independence and, on June 12, 1898, was finally free after nearly four centuries of Spanish colonial rule. For more info contact: |
