Global Chicago Highlights: Organization of the Month - March 2005 |
The Chicago Council:This space is usually reserved for Chicago organizations that contribute to the global life of our city. This month we immodestly salute ourselves, The Chicago Council. The occasion is our move on Feb. 25 to bigger and better offices at 332 South Michigan Avenue, so we’re taking this opportunity to announce the move and to remind readers of our own role in a globalizing Chicago. The Council, founded in 1922, has been at the same address, at 116 South Michigan Avenue, for no less than fifty-seven years. But in the past three years, we have doubled our activities, doubled our budget and doubled our staff. Part of this is in response to a new post 9/11 demand by Chicagoans for insights into America’s role in the world. But most of it is a rapid growth in our activities and a widening of our focus – not only to Chicago community and business leaders but to young leaders, to the academic community, and especially to the city’s vast and vibrant ethnic communities. We are doing more in the suburbs. We are doing more, through programs in music clubs and bars, to bring global affairs to younger audiences who want a more informal setting. We are doing more to bring Midwestern experts into our conversations. We are running more task forces, more roundtables, more seminars. We are bringing more world leaders to Chicago. And the end is not in sight. We plan to keep bringing the world the Chicago while making sure that Chicago’s voice is heard in the national debate on global policy. So we are bursting at the seams and need a newer, better launching pad for all we do. The new offices not only provide this but include conferences and seminar rooms that will enable us to bring many programs back in-house. The Council looks forward to a long and happy stay in its new home. Contact Info: |
