Heartland Alliance

Heartland Alliance for Human Needs and Human Rights:

Heartland Alliance advances the human rights and responds to the human needs of endangered populations – particularly the poor, the isolated, and the displaced – by providing comprehensive and respectful services and promoting solutions leading to a more just global society.

Heartland Alliance is an anti-poverty, human rights organization that provides housing, health care, human services and advocacy to 55,000 marginalized Chicagoans annually. Founded as Travelers Aid in 1888, today our nearly 600 staff provide services at 50 programs and sites throughout Chicago. More than 650 volunteers contribute 51,000 hours of service each year.

What are some of Heartland Alliance unique programs?

Enlaces America:

  • Enlaces America is the international program of Heartland Alliance. Enlaces América helps transnational communities reaffirm their commitment to building an equitable, sustainable, and dignified way of life for peoples in the Americas. In particular, we work with Latino immigrant communities in the United States to maximize their leadership and regional policy advocacy potential. Currently, Enlaces América's program work is focused in three areas: Building Transboundary Community Leadership; Linking Development, Human Rights, and Migration Policy; and Expanding Multi-sectoral Learning and Cooperation.

Midwest Immigrant and Human Rights Center:

  • MIHRC provides immigration assistance, deportation defense and asylum representation for low-income immigrants. MIHRC is listed in several online databases, including Trial Lawyers for Public Justice. For information on MIHRC or to volunteer as a pro bono attorney, call 312-660-1370.
