| With the AIDS virus spreading around the world, the epidemic represents
not only a global humanitarian catastrophe, but also increasingly
a threat to regional stability as economic and political structures
of several countries become threatened. Until now, the main impact
of AIDS has been centered on the African continent, but recent reports
provide alarming estimates of AIDS infections in countries such as
Russia, China, and India, where more than 40 percent of the world’s
population lives. Governments around the world will clearly need to
give a higher priority to AIDS to stem the epidemic. What are the
latest figures on people living with HIV/AIDS in the Chicago region,
in North America and around the globe? What are the future implications
for the fabric of these societies? |
