THE OBAMA FOREIGN POLICY DOCTRINE: THE RETURN OF REALPOLITIK? Wednesday, 30-Jun-2010 05:30 PM - 07:15 PM Peter Beinart, Schwartz Senior Fellow, New America Foundation Interviewed by Thomas Wright, Executive Director, Studies, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs

At present, the Obama administration finds itself saddled with a tangle of foreign policy challenges, complex in character and long in the making: unfinished and unpopular wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, stalled peace talks in the Middle East, hostile states acquiring nuclear capabilities, an ongoing global economic recession, looming climate and environmental dangers, and growing “multipolar” worries brought on by an ascendant Asia. Please join The Chicago Council for the final public program before our summer recess, when Peter Beinart will discuss the Obama administration’s progress to date in addressing these challenges, and consider whether a single, coherent vision has emerged that defines the administration's foreign policy.

Peter Beinart is a Schwartz Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation and associate professor of journalism and political science at The City University of New York. He is also a senior political writer for The Daily Beast, and a contributor to Time. From 2007 to 2009, Beinart was a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. From 1995 until 2006, he worked at The New Republic, serving as the magazine’s editor, senior editor, and managing editor. He is the author of The Good Fight: Why Liberals—And Only Liberals—Can Win the War on Terror and Make America Great Again. Beinart received his B.A. from Yale University and his M.Phil from University College, Oxford.
